The main objective of the Canal Bajo del Añarbe project in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, was to construct an alternative pipeline to the existing canal, ensuring a reliable drinking water supply in the event of an emergency or during maintenance of the existing infrastructure.
The project, promoted by Mancomunidad de Aguas del Añarbe and Saniplast through the Dragados/Moyua joint venture, strengthened the security and reliability of the water supply to the city of San Sebastián and the municipalities of Rentería, Pasaia, Hernani, Lasarte-Oria, Oiartzun, Usurbil, Lezo, Urnieta and Astigarraga, providing drinking water to around 318,000 residents.
Carried out in 2023, the project included the construction of a new intake on the Urumea River, a pumping station at Lastaola adjacent to the former hydroelectric power plant, and the renewal of the existing canal through the installation of a new buried GRP pipeline designed to convey drinking water to the Petritegi Drinking Water Treatment Plant (DWTP) in Astigarraga.
The 600-metre-long DN 1200 pipeline, manufactured and supplied by Amiblu, replaced the former open canal connecting the Añarbe reservoir with the DWTP, providing a more efficient, reliable and durable solution.
The advantages of GRP technology played a decisive role in the material selection process. Compared with traditional materials such as concrete and steel, GRP pipes offer a significantly lower environmental impact. Their low weight simplifies transport and handling on site, while their excellent hydraulic performance and corrosion resistance ensure a long service life with minimal maintenance requirements. These characteristics can deliver significant savings during both construction and operation, making GRP systems a particularly valuable solution for drinking water infrastructure projects.
The construction of the alternative pipeline for the Canal Bajo del Añarbe represented a significant technical challenge for the Amiblu Pipes Spain team due to both the complexity of the works and the demanding project schedule. Despite these challenges, the pipeline was installed in just six months, between May and October 2023.
The low weight of the GRP pipes also reduced the need for auxiliary machinery, helping to streamline installation works and significantly lower construction costs. The project additionally included the manufacture and supply of numerous custom GRP fittings, including elbows, tees with inspection openings and tees with branches for air valves, specifically designed to suit the requirements of the infrastructure and ensure optimal performance.
