A 2-km Amiblu GRP pipe network secures cooling for the 390 MW Atinkou power plant, strengthening Côte d’Ivoire’s role as a regional energy hub.
The Atinkou combined-cycle power plant in Taboth, near Jacqueville, was built to replace outdated thermal generation units in Côte d’Ivoire and ensure stable baseload capacity for the fast-growing economy. Beyond domestic demand, it should strengthen the country’s role as a regional energy exporter through the CSLG (Côte d’Ivoire–Sierra Leone–Liberia–Guinea) interconnection project.
For the 390 MW plant to function reliably and sustainably, the systems building its operational backbones had to be top-engineered and future-proof. Qualities that were found at Amiblu – with regards to both products and project support.
GRP was selected as the material of choice due to its corrosion-resistance in coastal and brackish-water environments, as well as its low weight facilitating installation with reduced reliance on heavy lifting equipment. The material’s smooth hydraulic properties guarantee low head loss and energy-efficient operation, while its long service life and minimal maintenance requirements reduce lifecycle costs.
Amiblu’s scope covered the full design, manufacture, supply, erection, and hydrotest of a two-kilometre-long cooling water system, combining above- and underground pipelines up to DN 2200. Eranove, the project developer and concessionaire of the Atinkou combined-cycle power plant, is a pan-African industrial group with headquarters in Paris active in power generation and water management. The company played a central role in structuring the project, securing financing, and ensuring its long-term operation through a public-private partnership modal that expands access to essential services and drives sustainable economic growth across the region.
Over a two-year construction period from 2022 to 2024, Amiblu delivered its first full turnkey cooling water system in Sub-Saharan Africa, overcoming complex logistical and environmental challenges to meet European industrial quality standards on site. Upon completion, the network underwent full leak-testing and was handed over to the client for commissioning. Today, the GRP cooling water system is fully operational, ensuring the safe, efficient, and sustainable functioning of the Atinkou combined-cycle power plant.
