Amiblu participa en la construcción de una planta de recuperación de energía en Londres

Amiblu participates in the construction of an energy recovery plant in London

This highly complex industrial project will modernise Europe’s oldest energy-from-waste facility, which has been in operation since 1971.

Amiblu Pipes Spain is contributing to the construction of a state-of-the-art energy recovery facility at Edmonton EcoPark in North London.

The new infrastructure, awarded to Acciona in 2022, will convert non-recyclable waste generated by two million residents into electricity, heating and hot water for up to 127,000 homes.

The project is part of an ambitious redevelopment programme led by the North London Waste Authority (NLWA) to transform Edmonton EcoPark, Europe’s oldest energy-from-waste facility, which has been operational since 1971. Designed to the highest standards of quality and sustainability, the new plant will have the capacity to process 700,000 tons of residual waste annually and convert it into energy.

Amiblu is responsible for the facility’s flue gas pipeline system, extending from the induced draft fan to a 100-metre-high chimney stack. The supplied system includes 520 metres of GRP pipes with a diameter of DN 2600 mm and a pressure class of PN 6 bar, featuring a stiffness class of SN 2500. It has been designed to operate under the negative pressure generated by the induced draft system and is manufactured using a high-performance vinyl ester resin specifically formulated to withstand chemical corrosion and temperatures exceeding 130°C.

Each pipe section incorporates a 2.5 mm-thick liner, providing an additional protective barrier against the aggressive nature of the conveyed gases.

The installation, arranged in two parallel lines, consists of a horizontal section running approximately 30 metres above ground level and a vertical section – the most technically demanding part of the project –  which reaches a height of more than 112 metres above the facility’s ground level.

At the top of the chimney stack, a separation unit has been integrated to capture condensation generated during the process. The condensate is discharged through a DN 80 mm GRP drainage line, also designed to provide long-term structural reliability and chemical resistance.

Amiblu is managing the entire project from its manufacturing facility in Camarles (Tarragona), Spain, under a turnkey contract that includes detailed engineering, the supply of pipes and fittings, and installation supervision.

The delivery of this major engineering project is of considerable importance to London, where an estimated 223 tons of waste are generated every hour. The new facility is expected to become operational in 2027.

Global Industrial Expertise

With a comprehensive end-to-end service offering, Amiblu is a global leader in the development of advanced and innovative solutions for highly complex industrial projects. GRP pipe systems offer significant advantages for industrial applications, including exceptional durability in aggressive environments, high axial strength, versatility, and the ability to withstand pressure in both buried and above-ground installations.

As with all complex industrial engineering projects, Amiblu – working closely with the other companies involved – ensures that every stage of project delivery is carried out to the highest standards, guaranteeing optimum performance and long-term sustainability.
