Amiblu helps shape new technical guidelines for sliplining rehab
Interview with Amedeo Rugen, Managing Director of Amiblu Italy
Amiblu Italia has actively contributed, within the Permanent Technical Commission of IATT (Italian Association for Trenchless Technology), to drafting the document “Rehabilitation of wastewater pipes and sewers with prefabricated rigid pipes (discrete pipes).”
This document – available for free in Italian here – is now a recognized reference for water management companies, designers, and operators. It provides clear instructions on Discrete Sliplining procedures for solids-free sewers, outlines applicable technical requirements, and summarizes the main standards as well as quality control guidelines.
To learn more about Amiblu’s role in developing and applying this technology, we spoke with Amedeo Rugen, Managing Director of Amiblu Italy.
What is the value of the technical document developed with IATT?
The IATT promotes and advances no-dig methods and is a recognized reference point for the entire trenchless sector. The technical document we helped prepare is now an important operational tool for professionals working in this field.
It defines the structural rehabilitation of pipes using prefabricated rigid pipes and provides shared criteria for effective, durable, and sustainable interventions. This marks an important step in strengthening the regulatory framework for a technology that has already been widely proven in practice.
What exactly is Discrete Sliplining and when is it used?
Discrete Sliplining is a relining technique in which rigid prefabricated GRP pipes are inserted into an existing pipeline and assembled directly on site. It is used to restore both the hydraulic function and structural stability of deteriorated pipes, including large-diameter and non-circular profiles, in both pressure and non-pressure systems.
What advantages does it offer compared to other technologies?
Discrete Sliplining stands out for its versatility, quick installation, and minimal environmental impact. It is widely applied in aqueducts, sewers, hydropower, and irrigation systems. The GRP pipes, factory-prefabricated and -cured, ensure high pressure and stiffness ratings, excellent structural strength, and superior hydraulic performance.
Amiblu offers a wide range of diameters, stiffness classes, and profiles – including non-circular pipes – enabling tailor-made solutions for every project. Light weight and corrosion resistance, inherent to GRP, further facilitate installation, even in challenging environments.
How does Amiblu’s experience contribute to this field?
Amiblu has extensive experience with rehabilitation projects using Discrete Sliplining, with numerous references across Italy and Europe.
Our ability to deliver customized solutions even for unconventional profiles allows us to meet diverse project needs. This is supported by comprehensive technical assistance: from preliminary evaluation to installation, we stand by our clients with turnkey know-how.
