New desalination plant with Amiblu GRP pipes in Algarve

Amiblu participates in strategic desalination plant in the Algarve (Portugal)

The new facility, designed to produce drinking water from seawater, will help secure a reliable long‑term water supply for the region.

Amiblu will contribute to the creation of a major desalination facility planned for Albufeira in Portugal’s Algarve region. The new infrastructure, which will extract seawater for drinking-water consumption, is a pioneering project at the national level: It is the first desalination plant developed in mainland Portugal to secure a reliable long‑term supply of drinking water for a region that plays a vital role in tourism, agriculture, biodiversity, and wastewater treatment – while meeting the highest standards of quality and reliability.

The new plant will use a reverse osmosis desalination system and will incorporate solutions for energy optimisation through renewable energy sources. It will have the capacity to produce 16 million m³ of drinking water, with plans to reach 24 million m³.

Amiblu will manufacture and supply 8,132 meters of GRP pipes with diameters from DN 300 up to DN 1200, operating at pressures of 6 and 10 bar, for the new plant. Along with multiple fittings of all kinds, the GRP pipelines will capture seawater and return the brine. Supply is expected to begin in March.

The execution of this engineering project is of vital importance for the Algarve, as it guarantees the long-term supply of water for human consumption

The new Algarve desalination plant is part of the project “Design, Construction and Operation of the Desalination System in the Algarve Region (Albufeira, Portugal),” promoted by a consortium made up of the Portuguese companies Luságua and Aquapor and the Spanish company GS Inima. The project has a total budget of €108 million.
